What is a Monotype
A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print that can be made with or without a printing press. An image can be created many different ways using a wide variety of surfaces, mediums and techniques. You create your image on a Plexiglas plate using water-based ink and then transfer your design to paper by hand.
This versatile printmaking process has limitless results with unique textures and surface effects you can’t get any other way. It’s fun and spontaneous – and full of surprises!
Workshop Goals
- To encourage creativity and abstract thinking with this limitless printmaking medium.
- To encourage students to explore the many rich textures and colors that are unique to monotype prints.
- To encourage students to be loose, free & spontaneous and go with the flow.
- To enjoy the element of surprise with this process when the print is pulled.
Monotypes through Time
Historically monotypes have been done by artists as early as 1640. Rembrandt Van Rijn, the Dutch painter and printmaker, experimented with monotype effects. Edgar Degas also worked with monotypes and later added pastels on top of them. Paul Gaugin made monotypes with watercolors instead of the traditional inks. More contemporary artists like Picasso and Matisse worked with monotypes as well.
